Rīgas satiksme has completed and concluded the first tests of fast charging equipment

Continuing the development of the electric bus project and the introduction of related technologies, Rīgas satiksme has completed and successfully tested the first of a total of seven fast electric charging stations. It has been built in the bus park 6 on Kleistu iela and marks a significant step in the creation of a unified electric bus charging infrastructure. In parallel, work continues on the construction of six more stations.

The first station has been fully constructed and has passed tests. The results confirm that the infrastructure is ready to provide electric bus charging on the other side of the River Daugava as well.20251208_142019.jpg

In total, there will be seven fast charging stations in Riga, which will form a unified charging system for the daily operation of electric buses.

Two fast charging points have been built on Abrenes iela, and one each in Vecmīlgrāvis, Jugla, and Imanta (at the bus park 6 on Kleistu iela), as well as at the Imanta terminus on Airītes iela and at the planned transport hub on Višķu iela.

Currently, the Rīgas satiksme vehicle park has 52 electric buses. Until now, their deployment on routes had to be planned taking into account that charging facilities were only available at the bus park 7 on Vestienas iela. The construction of the new facility will allow for an expansion of the range of routes on which environmentally friendly, quiet, and modern electric buses can be used, as well as significantly reducing the need for empty trips to charging stations.

The construction of this infrastructure and the purchase of electric buses is being implemented as part of the project “Emission Reduction in the State City of Riga – Supply of Electric Buses and Development of Electric Charging Points” (project No. 1.1.1.2.i.1/1/23/I/CFLA/001). The project is financed by the European Union Recovery Fund. The total planned cost of the project is EUR 16.7 million, of which EUR 14.3 million is co-financed by the EU. The costs also include the purchase of 17 electric buses and their related parts.

The aim of the project is to reduce emissions from public transport services, improve their attractiveness and reduce their impact on the urban environment, promoting the gradual decarbonisation of public transport and the phasing out of fossil fuels.
